Twelve Indigenous Peoples (IP) couples were united in marriage during a tribal mass wedding ceremony held on August 20, 2024, at the Barangay Sumpong Covered Court. The event, a highlight of the “Araw ng Barangay Sumpong,” aimed to formalize the unions of couples who have been living together as husband and wife.

The ceremony was conducted in accordance with the customary laws, rites, and traditions of the couples, as provided for under RA 8371. Datu Danny Sarito officiated the wedding, with assistance from Bae Adelina Tarino (Bae Inatlawan) and Datu Chepin Jose Gumindan.

The event also sought to ensure that the couples could access essential government programs, such as the 4Ps (Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program) and PhilHealth.

City Mayor Jay Warren R. Pabillaran, along with members of the City Council, barangay officials, and various tribal chieftains, attended the ceremony to show their support. The City Civil Registrar’s Office was present to assist with the signing of marriage certificates, ensuring the legal recognition of the unions.
