The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region X, in partnership with the Science Applications and Promotions Institute, celebrated the National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) sa amihang Mindanao with the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya: Kabalikat sa Maunlad at Matatag na Kinabukasan,” last October 25–30, 2022, at the Atrium, Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City.

The City Government of Malaybalay was invited to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing on the Smart City Project as one of the beneficiaries. It was attended by CEEDMO Designate, Mr. Romeo R. Lapiceros Jr., CDRRM Officer, Mr. Alan Comiso, BukSU’s Vice President for Research, Extension,and Innovation, Dr. Joy M. Mirasol, BukSU Extension Unit Director, Dr. Jiemalyn B. Paulican, and DOST Provincial Director, Retchie Guno.

Mr. Lapiceros delivered his message of gratitude on behalf of Malaybalay City Mayor Jay Warren R. Pabillaran. In his speech, he highlighted the SHIELD development program of the city that aligns with the Smart City Project. “This project aligns with the development agenda of our good mayor. It is to establish the SHIELD program. Malaybalay, as a first-class city, has long envisioned itself as a smart and sustainable city, and with the partnership and assistance of the DOST and our long-time partner, the BukSU, this will undoubtedly become a reality.”

He further added that this project will help Malaybalay, as one of the chosen LGUs, become one of the smart cities through this project. “We hope that we will see the outcomes of our efforts, which would make the city on the map being one of the smart cities in the Philippines.”

The signing of the MOU is just one part of the six-day celebration that included the private sector, entrepreneurs, national guests, and other stakeholders. Exhibits were showcased together with the Oro Best Expo 2022 and the awarding of outstanding proponents and partners.

The event highlights the significant contribution of science and technology to national development. The MOU signing with the DOST was a success, together with the Mayors of the Municipalities of Magsaysay, Iligan City, Oroquieta City, Cagayan De Oro City, and Malaybalay City, to further the LGUs’ reach into becoming smart cities in the country.
