Malaybalay City, July 26, 2024 – The City Government of Malaybalay, through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), held a media forum titled “Kapihan” at the People’s Hall in the City Hall, Barangay Casisang. The event marked the culmination of National Disaster Resilience Month, aiming to enhance communication on disaster preparedness and response.

The forum, themed “Bantayog ng Katatagan at ang Pagbubuklod sa Layuning Kahandaan,” featured detailed presentations by the four vice chairpersons of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Council. They discussed various programs related to disaster preparedness, prevention and mitigation, recovery and rehabilitation, and disaster response.

Speakers included Ms. Marites M. Langam from the City ENRO, who addressed ongoing projects and activities, and Engr. Lilianne A. Obre from CAgrO, who reported on the El Niño phenomenon’s impact on crops and inland fisheries. Ms. Milfe Pandan from CSWDO discussed disaster response and early recovery efforts, while Mr. Perfecto Ray Bayo from CUDHO detailed the LGU’s response to disaster-prone communities in Malaybalay. Mr. Alan J. Comiso presented the CDRRMO’s initiatives for community preparedness and response.

The forum was attended by 30 media personnel. City Administrator Atty. Ana Marie Bergado emphasized the forum’s purpose: to communicate Malaybalay’s plans, programs, projects, and activities related to disaster preparedness and response. She highlighted the media’s role as a catalyst for accountability and good governance.

City Mayor Jay Warren R. Pabillaran underscored the media’s crucial role in bridging the gap between the government and the public. He stated that timely and accurate updates on policies, initiatives, and emergencies ensure that citizens are well-informed, which is essential for democracy.

An open forum moderated by Ms. Ruby Balistoy of the Philippine Information Agency concluded the event, allowing media personnel to raise concerns and questions, which were addressed by the panelists.
