Malaybalay City, Bukidnon – The Department of Health (DOH), in collaboration with the Local Government of Malaybalay, the City Health Office (CHO), and the Department of Education (DepEd), re-launched the School-Based Immunization Program on October 7, 2024, at Malaybalay City Central School (MCCS).
The program aims to protect students from vaccine-preventable diseases.
Distinguished guests graced the event, including Dr. John Raymund P. Suazo, Development Management Officer IV of the Provincial DOH Office (PDOHO) Bukidnon, Dr. Dennis P. Sangalang, City Health Officer II, Hon. Kathleen Cecille C. Pagaling, SP-Committee chair on Health, and several health and education personnel.
Dr. Suazo emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that “prevention is better than cure” and highlighting the effectiveness of vaccines in preventing diseases such as HPV, measles, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria.
Lorenzo O. Capacio, Chief of Schools Governance and Operations Division, welcomed the participants and stressed the impact of the program in keeping students healthy and in school. He noted that vaccination can prevent absences and reduce healthcare costs associated with illnesses.
In her message, Councilor Pagaling, speaking as both a parent and public official, underscored the significance of the program. She remarked, “Mag-unsa kung wala ang bakuna,” emphasizing the high cost of vaccines in private hospitals and the importance of making them accessible through public initiatives.
Dr. Sangalang encouraged parents and teachers to support the vaccination drive, ensuring that all eligible children are protected.
The program offers free vaccines to Grade 1, 4, and 7 students in public schools. Grade 1 and 7 learners received the measles-rubella and tetanus-diphtheria vaccines, while Grade 4 students were inoculated with the HPV vaccine, which helps prevent cervical cancer.
A highlight of the event was the signing of the pledge of commitment by local leaders, health workers, educators, and parents, affirming their support for the immunization program. The pledge emphasized a united effort to provide accessible immunization services and protect children from preventable diseases.
The program concluded with the vaccination of students, marking another step toward building a healthier community in Malaybalay City.
