There were few families who inhabited on it. These were the Malinda family headed the Ethnic Groups, which occupied the vast portion of this timber land. They cultivated the area and planted it with various agricultural crops as their means of living. Until such time, that the economy develops and more people visited this area and decided to settle in this land.
The leader named Teofelo Malinda, petitioned the Municipal Government of Malaybalay, to separate the Sitio Abuhan from the Barangay Managok, into a regular Barangay. The Request was granted by the Municipal Interior and Local Government, and the special barangay Election was held. Teofilo Malinda became the First Barangay Captain. A resolution then was passed naming the Barangay as Barangay Maligaya. Of which according to the name “MALINDA” derived from the family name of “Teofilo Malinda”, “MALI” from the first four letters of “MALINDA”, which “ NDA” were omitted, and were replace “GAYA” which became “MALIGAYA” which means “HAPPINESS”
